How to Sum by Month in Excel

Total transactions for a calendar month with SUMIFS and EOMONTH — from a month-start date or any date inside the month.

You will learn to

  • Sum one month with a start date and EOMONTH
  • Use EOMONTH(date,-1) when the input is any day in the month
  • Average a month’s transactions

How it works

To total a month from a list of dated transactions, give SUMIFS two date conditions: on or after the first of the month, and on or before the last day of that month. EOMONTH(E2,0) returns the last day of the month containing E2, so you never have to worry about 28, 30 or 31 days: =SUMIFS(C2:C12,A2:A12,">="&E2,A2:A12,"<="&EOMONTH(E2,0)).

If the input can be any day in the month, use EOMONTH(date,-1) — the last day of the previous month — as an exclusive start. The same date window works in AVERAGEIFS and COUNTIFS for monthly averages and counts.

=SUMIFS(C2:C12,A2:A12,">="&E2,A2:A12,"<="&EOMONTH(E2,0))
