How to Turn a Range into a Single Row with TOROW in Excel

Lay a column of names across a row, list only confirmed volunteers sideways, and show distinct teams as a header row.

You will learn to

  • Turn a column into a row
  • Lay a filtered list across a row
  • Build a header row of distinct values

How it works

TOROW(array, [ignore], [scan_by_column]) returns the values of a range as a single row. =TOROW(A2:A9) lays a column of names across the sheet, which is handy for dashboard headers or a compact roster. Like TOCOL, it can skip blanks (ignore 1) and errors (ignore 2), and it reads two-dimensional ranges row by row unless told otherwise.

TOROW shines on the output of other formulas: =TOROW(FILTER(A2:A9,C2:C9="Yes")) lists confirmed people across a row, and =TOROW(UNIQUE(B2:B9)) turns the distinct teams into column headers for a summary table.

=TOROW(FILTER(A2:A9,C2:C9="Yes"))
