How to Turn Dates into Month and Weekday Labels in Excel
Use TEXT with date codes like "mmm yyyy" and "ddd" to label a content calendar by month, weekday and friendly go-live dates.
You will learn to
- Turn a date into a month label
- Get the weekday name of a date
- Put a readable date inside a sentence
How it works
Excel stores dates as serial numbers, which is why joining a date with & shows something like 46095. =TEXT(B2,"mmm yyyy") converts the date into a label such as "Mar 2026", and =TEXT(B2,"dddd") returns the weekday name. Useful codes: d / dd (day), ddd / dddd (Mon / Monday), m / mm / mmm / mmmm (3 / 03 / Mar / March), yy / yyyy (26 / 2026).
Month labels make great grouping keys for summaries, and TEXT is the only way to keep a nicely formatted date inside a sentence: ="Goes live "&TEXT(B2,"dddd, mmmm d").
=TEXT(B2,"mmm yyyy")
