How to Use the INT Function in Excel
INT drops the decimals of a number — perfect for splitting a date-time into its date and its time of day.
You will learn to
- Strip the time from a timestamp with INT
- Extract the time of day
- Count timestamps that fall on a given date
How it works
INT(number) rounds a number down to the nearest integer. In Excel a date-time is a whole number of days plus a fraction for the time, so =INT(B2) returns just the date and =B2-INT(B2) returns just the time of day. Format the results as a date or a time to read them.
INT always rounds down, so negative numbers move away from zero: =INT(-3.7) is -4. If you only want to chop off the decimals, use TRUNC instead.
